How to taste an OJU dry gin: the beginner's guide

OJU Moringa Mint Lime in a tropical setting

Discovering craft dry gin, or discovering OJU altogether? Here's how to get the most out of our two references, with no special equipment or sommelier vocabulary required.

A good dry gin is tasted differently depending on whether you want to understand its aromatic profile or simply enjoy it on a night out. Here are both approaches, in order.

1. Neat tasting — to understand the gin

Pour 2 to 3 cl into a small glass, no ice. Let the gin sit for a moment at room temperature — cold numbs part of the aromas. Bring your nose to the glass gradually: you should first pick up the top notes (citrus, freshness), then the deeper notes (moringa, mint, or ginger depending on the reference).

On the palate, take a small sip and let it warm before swallowing. This step reveals OJU's botanical profile far more than diluted in a cocktail.

2. Gin and tonic — the classic that never fails

For a more accessible first approach: 5 cl of OJU, a premium tonic (low in sugar, so as not to overpower the botanicals), plenty of ice, and a simple garnish. For OJU Moringa Mint Lime, a lime wheel and a few mint leaves are enough. For OJU Ginger, a thin slice of fresh ginger extends the theme without overloading it.

3. Mistakes to avoid

Don't drown the gin in too much ice before even pouring it — the tonic should stay cold, but the gin needs to still express itself. Also avoid very sweet tonics, which mask the botanical complexity we took time to build. And above all: always taste the gin alone before mixing it, to know what you're trying to reveal or balance in the cocktail.

"A craft dry gin reveals itself as much in the gesture as in the recipe." — OJU
