Moringa, West Africa's miracle plant

Nicknamed "the miracle tree" or "the tree of life," moringa has been cultivated in West Africa for generations for its exceptional nutritional properties. No one, before OJU, had thought to bring it into a dry gin.

Moringa oleifera grows easily in West Africa's hot climates. Its leaves, rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, have long been used as a dietary supplement, in herbal tea, or dried and ground into powder to enrich meals.

A nutritional ingredient, never a distilling ingredient

The world of gin has traditionally relied on one central ingredient — juniper — paired with complementary botanicals: citrus, spices, roots, herbs. Moringa had never been part of that aromatic palette. Its reputation was strictly nutritional, never spirit-related.

That absence is what interested us. Moringa has a green, slightly earthy aromatic profile, with a herbaceous freshness reminiscent of green tea or certain aromatic herbs. A profile that, once worked through distillation, proved surprisingly complementary to the classic structure of a dry gin.

Moringa, mint, lime: an equation of freshness

For our first reference, OJU Moringa Mint Lime, we paired moringa with the freshness of mint and the brightness of lime. The goal: to build a herbaceous, lively gin that retains, on the palate, the slightly round texture typical of moringa, while offering the freshness expected of a good dry gin in a cocktail.

A plant that hasn't finished surprising us

Moringa illustrates well OJU's approach: starting from an ingredient West Africa knows intimately, but that no one had yet thought to bring into dialogue with the codes of craft spirits. We believe there's still much to explore in this direction — and moringa is probably only the first step.
