OJU, the African vision of craft dry gin

Gin was born in Europe, reinvented in London, and conquered the world through hundreds of craft distilleries. We wanted to ask a simple question: what would a dry gin look like if it were conceived not in Europe, but from West Africa, with its own botanicals?

That question gave birth to OJU.

A name, an intention

OJU means "the eye" or "the vision" in several West African languages. That's no coincidence. OJU isn't simply a lighter variation of WAKIZA — it's a brand in its own right, with its own vision: looking at West Africa's botanical heritage through the eyes of a craft distiller, not just those of traditional pharmacopoeia.

Where WAKIZA embodies the prestige and power of the warrior, OJU explores more experimental, more contemporary territory: that of bar culture, of bartenders searching for the rare ingredient, of spirits enthusiasts wanting to taste something they've never tried before.

Moringa and ginger, botanicals to reinvent

Our first reference, OJU Moringa Mint Lime, starts from a plant well known in West Africa for its exceptional nutritional properties — moringa, sometimes nicknamed "the miracle tree." No one, before us, had thought to pair it with the aromatic structure of a dry gin. The result: an herbaceous, fresh, complex gin unlike any other.

Our second reference, OJU Ginger, instead embraces a bolder, spicier character — fresh West African ginger, distilled with precision to produce a warm, assertive gin, designed for cocktails that don't seek subtlety.

A vision, not an imitation

OJU doesn't try to resemble European dry gins or compete with them on their own turf. Our ambition lies elsewhere: to offer bartenders and craft spirits enthusiasts an ingredient they'll find nowhere else, because it comes from a terroir no other brand has explored this way.

It's this vision — looking at West Africa as a territory of unexplored botanicals rather than a source of decorative exoticism — that makes OJU a craft brand in its own right, not a simple line extension.
